Hello everyone! Today we're going to talk about music and feminism. The two are often linked, and that produces great engaged songs. As girls often feel belittled and lack of confidence, female (and male) singers tend to encourage them to be themselves and believe in their dreams, for being a girl doesn't mean being weaker. Here is my top 5 of the best girl-empowering songs of the last years!

Let's go!

1. "NØ" by Meghan Trainor

This very recent hit is a wake up call addressed to all the stalkers in the world. When a woman says no, it's no. No matter how she's dressed, no matter what she told you before, no matter where you are or who you are. The expression "I'm feeling untouchable" especially is a powerful message of confidence and empowering.

Lesson 1: Do not fear to say "no" and refuse anything. It's up to you to decide.

Lyrics:

"I think it's so cute and I think it's so sweet/ How you let your friends encourage you to try and talk to me/ But let me stop you there, oh, before you speak! [...] My name is no./ My sign is no. /My number is no. /You need to let it go./ [...] First you gonna say you ain't runnin' game, thinkin' I'm believing every word/Call me beautiful, so original, telling me I'm not like other girls/ I was in my zone before you came along, now I'm thinking maybe you should go. [...] All my ladies, listen up/ If that boy ain't giving up/ Lick your lips and swing your hips/ Girl all you gotta say is: My name is no.

I'm feeling untouchable."

2. "Confident" by Demi Lovato

You surely know Demi Lovato for being a feminist. She proved it again with her new song "Confident", which is clearly a message for women who don't trust in themselves. Plus, the video is real badass! Are you ready?

Lesson 2: Don't let yourself be discouraged by anyone! Trust yourself : there's nothing wrong with that!

Lyrics:

"It's time for me to take it/ I'm the boss right now /[...] 'Cause this is my game/ And you better come to play. [...]/ I make my own choice/ I run this show [...]/you've had me underrated./

What's wrong with being confident?"

3. "Do it like a dude" by Jessie J

Guys, stop pretending YOU are the tough ones. Girls can do it like dudes to. This is Jessie J's message to young girls. In this song, she seems to have been hurt by her boyfriend; but she chooses to show her strength and confidence in herself.

Lesson 3: Girls can as well be on fire and kill it too! Guys, you're not the only ones who can be tough!

Lyrics: "Stomp stomp I've arrived/ Drop the beat, nasty face/ Why you lookin' at me?/ Flyin' flyin' flyin' flyin' through the sky, in my spaceship. / I'm an alien tonight.

I can do it like a brother/ Do it like a dude

We can do it like the man'dem, man'dem. Hey."

4. "Bad Blood" by Taylor Swift

Again, a very famous song that I suppose a lot of you know. The music video won the 2016 Grammy Award of the Best music video and the 2015 MTV Music Video award of the Video of the year. The song itself won the price of the Best music collaboration at the Teen choice awards of 2015 and Best song of the year at the MTV Europe Music awards. Selena Gomez, Ellie Goulding, Cara Delevingne, Jessica Alba, Zendaya and the others play the role of warriors in the video and we must admit it makes us feel also strong and confident!!! The video really looks like a mini-movie, close to the Hunger Games atmosphere for instance. The song in itself relates a betrayal from one of her friends or maybe a lover.

Lesson 4: Don't try me, bro! You'll regret it!

Lyrics: "Still got scars on my back from your knife/ So don't think it's in the past, these kinda wounds they last and they last. /Band-aids don't fix bullet holes/ You say sorry just for show/ 'Cause, baby, now we got bad blood!"

4. "I dont" need a man" by The Pussycat Dolls

Now, society is trying to make you feel like you need a boyfriend to protect you and make you feel happy. The thing is, if it drags you down to be alone JUST because of the social pressure, just let go of it. You're better off on your own if that's YOUR choice. Be happy and proud of yourself. You don't need to depend on men. Girls aren't pets for you boys, just let go of it!

Lesson 5: A woman doesn't need a man to be feel happy and complete.

Lyrics: "I see you looking at me like I got something that's for you/ And the way that you stare, don't you dare, 'cause I'm not about to/Just give it all up to you 'cause there are some things I won't do/ And I'm not afraid to tell you [...] I don't need a man to make it happen/ I get off being free/ I don't need a man to make me feel good, I get off doing my thing/ I don't need a ring around my finger to make me feel complete/I'm doing fin/ I feel brand new/I I don't need a ring around my finger to make me feel complete!"

Thta's it, girls! See you soon for another article in French or in English! Don't forget to always feel confident! Remember you ARE the boss!

Everyone and each of you deserves to be happy! For now, you might as well need to listen to Beyonce to feel strong; but one day, you'll undertand you've got the power in yourself.

Take care,

Mia L.
